Brightness Slider App Reviews

No control for individual screens

The slider in the menu bar adjusts the brightness of both displays at the same time and does not dim the external display until the laptop screen is all the way down. If I use the brightness keys to try to bring the laptop screen back up a bit, it stops dimming the external monitor. There is a flash of full brightness when adjusting the slider from a very low setting.

Nice idea but...

I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro with a ViewSonic external monitor. I installed Brightness Slider, and at first it seemed great… Moving the slider up & down adjusted the brightness of the external monitor. The problem however, is that it doesn’t maintain the setting, so every few minutes or so, the monitor would go to full brightness. If a new version comes out, I’ll try it, but for now, I’m not using it.

Doesn’t support multiple monitors

Works well on the primary monitor. The control even shows up on the secondary monitor (with Mavericks), but its adjustment still only affects the primary monitor. Would be better if it supported more than one screen, and would be great if it worked on each one independently.

Exactly that I need.

Thank you!

Does not control my external USB monitor (USB / DIsplayLink)

I’m using an AOC e1659Fwu external USB monitor, driven by DisplayLink software on my MacBook Air (OSX 10.9.4). This app has absolutely no effect on my external monitor, it does nothing.

Mac Displays only, controls all at once

Not mentioned in description: - Only dims mac displays - Displays all displays at once, without individual control

same issue on os x 10.9 and 10.10

brightness adjustment working after 50% (half of bar) also please add 10.10 notifiction widget and change icon.

Please add Yosemite dark theme support!

Icon is invisible with dark theme in Yosemite!

Perfect!

I can now brighten my Thunderbolt display with ease!

Great stuff!

So cool!! All sorts of angst about Mac trying to give older displays, (23 inch ADC Cinema in this case) a one way ticket to the local land fill, when they decided to quit offering support and removed the brightness control for them in Yosemite. And here is the perfect solution, for free even.

Not for dual-display set ups

For the most part it seems to do what i want it to…I have a mac pro with two non-Apple external monitors, brightness adjustment isn’t always straight forward through the monitors’ menus. I didn’t work with my secondary monitor at all—which really defeats the purpose of using it. Otherwise it’s alright, nothing fancy, but definitely dims the display.

Issue with dark mode?

The program works as advertised. But, I prefer and use Mac OS X’s dark mode. I’m not seeing the icon until I click on it. I would love to see an update to this app because it’s perfect except for that issue.

It works, but not for dual displays

It will dim your main display, but not a second display. It kind of defeats the point of the app to have one dimmed and the other still burning out your retinas.

Bugs Developer Non Responsive

I like the app, but it has it’s bugs. I tried contacting the developer regarding the bugs, however he never responded. * Issues: App does not remember brightness (despite option being checked) when I plug back external monitor. Brightness always never reverts to previous setting. At times, I also have to restart the app because when I plug back my monitor the Brightness Slider app does not cover the whole screen, it only seems to cover a portion of it. If these issues get fixed, I’ll revise my rating to 5 stars.

So dark :)

Minimum display brightness too bright? This will make that miumum brightness more pleasant. It’s discreat and works for sinlge monitors. Combine this with flux for best results. (Flux is not on the app store)

Generally works well, occasionally requires a re-load

I have a 2012 11” MacBook Air with tandem (side-by-side) lightning displays at work and at home. When Brightness Slider initially loads it controls all three displays (laptop and two lightning displays) uniformly. But when I pack up and go to work or home, sometimes one of the two remote displays stops responding. It’s easy to kill and re-start the app to make it work again, but I’m spoiled…everything else works perfectly with windows resuming their correct positions, etc. (at least when running Mavericks), so small hiccups — like a non-responsive display and the need to reload an app to fix it — surface as my most annoying computer issue. Net:net I love the app, save this single annoying bug.

Overthought

It’s a clever trick, first turning down the native backlight and then overlaying a semitransparent veil. The problem is it means the point where that break happens has to be hard coded, and since no program can adjust the backlight of a non-Apple external display, the dimming effect will always be incongruous between your internal and external displays. Also, as others have noted, a bug: I have two external displays, but this only dims one of them.

Great app and it’s free.

When I was in a bind at the hotel because the TV brightness couldn’t be changed, I found this app. It works really well. I haven’t experienced the bugs other users have, but all the same it’s free! Thanks for making this app Alexandre

Doesn’t Work

Only controls the brightness of 2 out of my 3 Apple Displays.

It works, for some things...

Like pervious reviews. No second monitor support. Otherwise it does what it says.
